I stumbled across...
... a thread on reddit where someone was asking for creepy haunted house books and really disturbing scary books. The kind that have you checking the dark corners. I actually don't think I have read any of them, if I have then I have read so many since then that I have forgotten reading them. I know some of my horror friends have read a few, if not most of them so I thought I would ask for opinions/suggestions.
The suggestions were:
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
We Have Always Lived in a Castle by Shirley Jackson
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
The Elementals by Michael McDowell
The House Next Door by Ann Siddons
Wild Fell by Miachael Rowe
Hells House by Richard Matheson
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters
Rebecca by Daphne Maurier
This House is Haunted by John Boyne
Rooms by Lauren Oliver
John Dies at the End by David Wong
House on the Borderland by William Hodgson
Lunar Park by Brett Eliis
The Croning by Laird Barron
Recommended for the list by Char - Sweetheart, Sweetheart by Bernard Taylor. IT's sort of a ghost/haunted house combo and it's beautifully written. (Incidentally, it has a foreword by Michael Rowe, author of Wild Fell, another book on this list.)
